About The Alexander Technique

Imagine a technique for transforming the operation of your body, so simple that you can learn it yourself. It is a technique so amazing because your physical as well as your emotional life will soon change for the better, like opening a door into another world.

That technique is the Alexander Technique, developed by F. Matthias Alexander at the turn of the twentieth century. It is based on his discovery that the brain and the body are inseparable parts of a unified system, a psychophysical whole. His technique is a conscious process that retrains our habitual patterns of thinking and moving. He discovered that by using his thinking to redirect his movement and balance he could improve the quality of his activities. The conscious directions central to the Alexander Technique are: Free the neck to allow the head to move forward and upward so that the whole torso can lengthen and widen. Beginning with these simple directions, study of the Alexander Technique leads to greater and greater clarity of understanding of and improved use of your whole self and a finely tuned awareness and interaction with the world.

While performing as an actor Alexander was loosing his voice. As he studied to remedy the condition, he discovered that most people shared the same debilitating habits of physical use as his. These habits produce too much strain not just in speaking but in any physical activity. Misuse is the cause of tension and pain in the body, lack of poise and balance, restricted breathing, and lack of freedom and fluidity. Our unconscious reactions to stress and over-striving lead to chronic pain, or depression.

Feeling at Your Best

Even those who are feeling well and happily taking part in life and work will find a lot to be gained from a more conscious and physically unified life. Mr. Alexander’s discovery revealed that when we link conscious attention to our activity, we can recover our health, wellbeing and mental clarity, no matter what maladies, injuries, or performance challenges we face.   The Alexander Technique offers, as normal, an exuberant sense of wellness: physical freedom, ease, mental flexibility, and alertness.

All Walks of Life

When Alexander began training people in London, England to teach his technique in 1932, doctors, and physical therapists, Montessori teachers, university professors, and dance teachers became his students.  There are now more than 4000 teachers throughout the world. They are also musicians, actors, dancers, doctors, nurses, physical therapist, masseuses, athletes, personal trainers, and psychologists. Among the many famous people who learned, applied and valued the technique, are Aldous Huxley, John Dewey, George Bernard Shaw, Sir Ian McKellen, Kevin Kline, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Nobel Prize winners Dr. Nicholas Tinbergen and Sir Charles Sherrington. No matter what their work, many people have learned and practiced the technique to their benefit.

Scientific Findings

Since the 1950s researchers measured the effects of the Alexander Technique. Results showed improved in singing and musical performance, physical coordination, lowered blood pressure, and general improvements in wellbeing, mental clarity, and physical health. Today, there are scientific reports of significant relief from back and neck pain, Parkinson’s patients’ improved quality of life, better physical balance in the elderly, doctors’ surgery performance, breathing function, dancer’s performance, and postural flexibility.

Being Who You Are

There is no mechanical device— electronic, computerized or laser-beamed—that functions with such reliance, resilience, and delicate capacities as the human body. Because of what people do not know and are not aware of they limit the body’s functioning. With the Alexander Technique we can consciously release our debilitating habits and replace them with freedom and ease.
